Ho ho ho!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I love Christmas. And Christmas eve is almost better than Christmas day!

Friday I was at work again. It was tought getting up at 7am as I’d been endulging at a Winter Solstace dinner party the previous night held by some of Andrew’s friends. I left at midnight, but that was still two courses before the end! And annoyingly Friday was a really busy day at work. Friday night was another carol concert, and much fun it was too. Although I didn’t sing that well cos I was tired and kept getting confused I did smile a lot and pretended to get it right!

I drove home to Mum after the concert. I like driving at night, and I made good time too. Also I had christmas music in the car so I could sing loudly, which entertained me greatly. Oh yes, my car had to go back to the garage on Thursday with filled me with much un-mirth. They decided that what they’d told me on Wednesday wasn’t strictly true so it needed more work. Sigh. And naturally that cost more money. Boo!

I’ve been at home with Mum for two sleeps now. Its wonderful. I’ve had a nap and watched Speed (I’d never seen it before!) and worshipped Strictly Come Dancing too (hurrah for Mark!). And today we’re going to visit Fiona and family and then we’re heading off to GordonAndKristie flat for Christmas day.

I’ve got to work tomorrow night, and Boxing day night too. But that’s ok I guess as I’ve had a lovely weekend and I’m sure tomorrow will be nice and I can see Andrew on Boxing day (though I may be asleep for a lot of it!) and then its off to Cornwall for new year. Wooo.

Wishing you and all your loved ones a fantastic Christmas and peaceful 2007.

Much Love

Liz

Mulled pies and minced wine

Two posts in one day. Aren’t you lucky!

Thursday. Exam results day. Oops. I’ve got my marks now and its pretty much as I expected. I did well in the physics, ok in the pharmacology and f’ing shite in the physiology. Thursday night I went to the cinema with Cass and Andrew to see The Holiday. It was chewing gum for the brain but lovely. Exactly what I needed. Cass seemed to like it but Andrew wasn’t that impressed. I guess it did nothing new really, but its quite sweet.

Friday I stayed at home. If I’d have passed I’d have gone to a revision course, but I hadn’t! Friday night was a choir rehearsal and it was a bit rubbish really.

Saturday was lots of fun. Firstly I got tipsy on the free Baileys in Asda at lunchtime. Then I made a kick ass pass the parcel with forefits. Saturday night was the party. It didn’t start well when the poltergeist pulled over my Christmas tree an hour before guests arrived. I broke 7 of my pretty glass globes, boo. So had to do emergency hoovering. But it looked ok in the end, although the tree is a little more naked that I’d like.

The party was excellent. On the guest list were… Myself, Andrew, Clare, Charlotte, Dan, Gordon, Kristie, Sarah, Cass, Andy, Matt, Miranda, Steve, Kate and Ant. Between us all we had 40 mince pies from my Mum. 18 from Charlotte, 6 from Cass, 6 from Andy, 12 from Mr Sainsburys from M&S and another 12 from Mr Sainsburys (but his "better" ones) from Matt. That’s a lot of pies and I’m not sure who ate all of them as there’s still lots left! Also 14 bottles of red wine became empty. We played games (the vessel was aired) and I made the presentation of the LizIsDrunk points finale. Many congratulations to Steve who won the event. (Mahinda you are the weakest link, failing to get any points!). Miranda has kindly volunteered to audit the accounts and produce some graphs and when she’s done that I shall report here on who got what points and stuff like that. (Which is probably quite dull to anyone who isn’t Alsion or me!)

Sunday I felt very broken. I spoke to God on the porcelain telephone and swayed a lot at choir. At one point I couldn’t sing as the notes were moving on the page too much! Hair of the dog worked a treat though! Hurrah!

At the afternoon concert I had quite a fanclub. It was ace! 14 people. (Mum, G&K, K’s Mum, Dylis, Andrew, Andrew’s Mum, Dad, Sister and partner, Brother and partner, Nick and Emma) and the concert was good too. I felt quite tired and broken after the concert, but some cornerhouse food and beer fixed it a little. The evening concert was really good.

Monday I actually gave some anaesthetics. I’d not done that for ages. It was really good to be back at work and not on call. Yesterday I was in ICU and tonight I’m working the night. My car’s been in the carhospital today (£173, ouch! as not that much was done) but thankfully I’ve got it back now. Woooo.

Ooh, last night was the Christmas Curry! We went to Al-bilal, which had an amazing inflatable christmas snow dome thing. It was crazy! There was a good turnout although we were all a bit subdewed as it was a schoolnight I suspect.

I’m getting very excited about Christmas. Bring it on!!!!

Questions about 2006!

Ok, so this is a blatent steal from Pete’s blog, but other people have done it too so I hope he doesn’t mind too much! This is what I’ve been up to this year…

1. Overall, have you had a good year?

Yes! Its been great.

2. What has been your biggest achievement?

Hmm. Actually I don’t really feel I’ve achieved much, but I am happy

3. Did you take any exams, Pass?

Many. Advanced paediatric Life support (March), passed. Advanced life support, (December) passed. Primary FRCA (December) Failed. Choir vocal assessment, (April) passed. That’s surely more than my fair share!

4. Have you had your birthday yet? What did you do?

Yes. 23rd March. I got rather drunk at a Slugs gig. It was ace! And it was the day that Andrew met ALL my friends in one go, only having started going out with my two days previously!

5. Have you been on Holiday? Gone away anywhere?

Started the year in Wales with mum. Had a fantastic Egyptian adventure with Mum in February. Spent a week on a narrow boat near Rugby in July with Andrew. Visited Alsion in Edinburgh twice. Spent a few days in Wales Andrew in November. And going to Cornwall to celebrate this new year. Oh yes, and two trips to a very posh hotel spa, one for Paula’s hen do and another with mum. Hurrah!

6. Have you had a job?

Had? I’ve still got one! SHO in anaesthetics if you want my posh title.

7. Have you bought anything expensive?

Erm. Not really. Holidays took up a lot of dosh. An ipod. Planning lots of big purchases next year….

8. Made any big decisions?

A few.

9. Lost a friend or loved one?

Thankfully not. 2005 had far too much of that for my liking.

10. Met anyone amazing?

Yes. Many people. But one in particular.

11. Made new friends?

Yes! Lots.

12. Moved house?

No.

13. Tried something new?

Probably. But none are springing to mind at the moment.

14. Made any enemies?

Hopefully not.

15. What music will you remember from this year?

Yes. The a capella choir concert in April was ace. And singing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for the first time. And managing not to sing Mozarts requiem again, but sadly having to turn down the solo (but also making someone else very very happy so it was worth it in the end)

16. What movies have you seen at the cinema this year?

Quite a few. 4 in the last two weeks (Casino Royale, Stranger than Fiction, Shortbus and The Holiday). Kidulthood was the most disturbing and most memorable (for other reasons!).

17. What was your best night out?

Tameside Ball. P and P’s wedding. Birthday.

18. What was your worst night out?

The wedding from hell. TM

19. Best Day?

The wet day on the canal. P and P’s wedding. Spa break. Glossop date with Andrew. So many!

20. Worst Day?

Exam related stressy things. And a certain work related blog incident….

21. Was summer a gooden’?

Yeah. Leaving Tameside was a particular highlight

22. How many people have you kissed in the year of 2006?

One.

23. Did you fall in love?

Yes

24. Did you have your heart broken?

No.

25. Made any plans for next year?

Yeah. Get a job for the next 5 years or so. Buy a new car. Hopefully move house and spend more time with Andrew. Go on holiday with Mum. Pass bloody exam I hope.

26. Changed your image?

Not that I’m aware of.

27. Missed anyone?

Feel guilty that I should have kept better in touch with some old friends.

28. Know what you want in the future?

Yes. See 25. And some other things.

29. Regret anything?

No. I don’t do regrets.

30. Who has been your best friend through 2006?

I’m so greedy I have to have lots.

Andrew (the obvious one)

Mum (she’s ace)

King Og. (not seen her for weeks but miss her lots and lots)

Cass (has a strange crazy understanding of how my head works)

Rhiannon (miles away but still oh so special)

Plus everyone who received some LizIzDrunk points!

Not this time

Exam results are out today. I failed. I’m not very good at failing, as the only thing I’ve failed in my life till now is my Grade 7 piano*. I even managed to crash on my driving test and pass, but that’s another story (and was damn flukey).

Oh well. I kinda expected this to happen. Just means I’ll have to take it again I guess. And I have got a pencil out of it, but that’s not much to show for £230 quid.

* Ok, so I got a low pass in some second year med school exams which involved going to an extra oral exam a week later, but I passed that so it was ok in the end and not really a fail.

Quite a lot of things

So much to tell you all about. I think I’ll spilt it into catagories.

Spa.

Mum and I went to Hoar Cross Hall for a couple of nights. Having had such a fantastic time there with Paula and Suzanne at the hen-do I decided I had to go back with Mum. And after the exam seemed an excellent time. It was particularly good as Mum’s not been very well lately, so she needed pampering too.

We arrived Wednesday lunchtime. Our room was lovely, with a spa bath and two sinks! I had a Indian Head Massage and Hopi Ear candles as well as the complimentary facial and back massage. Bliss! I did two aqua aerobics classes and swam some lenghts in the salt water pool.

Wednesday night we had dinner and very nice it was too. We settled down in the room with wine to watch the film Love Actually and all was right with the world. However just after 11pm the fire alarm started to go off. It was intermittant so we ignored it. After a while it was still coming and going so I phoned reception who said it was a false alarm so we should ignore it. Which we did. We put the subtitles on and continued to watch the film. However then the alarm became constant and was rather loud. And then fire engines arrived. At this point Mum and I decided that maybe we should evacuate. I’d paid no attention to where the fire exits were but thankfully they were well signposted. I took my handbag (with purse, passport (I had it for the exam on the previous day and forgot to put it away!) car keys, ipod, phone) and my teddy bear, Simon. I couldn’t leave Simon to burn in the fire as he’s irreplaceble.

We left the building and went to the front entrance and met lots of other people in nightwear. Thankfully we were allowed into the dining room area to keep warm, but the bloody alarms kept going off and were really loud. In total four fireengines arrived and a crane and a tactical aid unit and an ambulance. The fire was in the day spa laundry and was classed as ‘little’. We were allowed back to our tooms at half one in the morning. So much for a relaxing time!

However the rest of the break was fantastic. And we got given Champagne and a voucher for the trouble of the fire, which was very nice. I’ll certainly be going back sometime. Probably not for a while until I’ve saved some more pennies and luxury doesn’t come cheap and probably when I get a new car too as its a bit embarrasing having to park my W reg 206 in the car park amongst the audis, bmws, porches and suchlike!

House tidy

Yesterday I had a tidy and a sort out. Its very theraputic getting rid of crap. And I even managed to tidy my bedroom. Sadly the post it notes are still all over my lounge as I might have passed the exam and wouldn’t want to have to put them all up again. Although I’ll probably just have to take them down on friday when I hear that I’ve failed.

Old friends

In the past 48 hours I’ve bumped into three people I’ve not seen for ages. One friend from med school at the Chirstmas Market last night, then a friend from CAOS and someone I know via Alsion both in Tesco. Its nice to see people. And I’m hoping to catch up with all my friends I’ve not seen for ages being the social hermit that I have been lately.

Christmas!

I’ve put up my tree, and I’m listening to carols as I type. I’m about to write my Christmas cards (which sadly I’ve not had time to make this year, will try harder for next year as I know people appreciate hand made efforts). I’ve bought some Christmas presents (and should really have posted the one to Rhiannon in America by now but haven’t so it’ll probably be a 12th night present!) but have lots more presents to buy. Good job I’ve got a day off work next week to go shopping. I love Christmas!

One last thing… I was on the telly last night. I was in a choir thing which we recorded back in May (Singing Thomas Tallis’ 40 part motet oin a choir of 800 people). I didn’t watch it as was out drinking Mulled wine, but Jocelyn did and said I was on a lot! Wheeee! Mum’s recorded it for me, so I’ll see it at Christmas. Wonder if its enough to qualify me to win the sweepstake.?……..

Time for a quickie

And for now I’m off to a health farm. Bring on the luxury!

Does anybody else have a tummy button?

Or am I the only one. Andrew laughted at me a lot last night for calling it that. He’s insistent that its actually a belly button. I considered pointing out that actually its an umbilicus, but decided against it.

Wednesday night Cass and I went on an adventure. It involved Cass abandoning her car at the motorway, then getting a BOGOF (curtesy of orangepeople). Then we had curry and it was lovely. Khanodoker or something like that, the place in East Didsbury, quite good on the whole, although probably had enough staff to serve all the resurants in a 3 mile radius. I chose my curry as it boasted very very very tender lamb, and it lived up to it.

After curry there was still quite a while till the film started, and we wanted ice cream. So the only option was to go to pizza hut for ice cream factory and coffee. Mmmmm. We ate lots of ice cream and sweets then felt quite sick. The staff there were running around a lot and certainly could have used some help from all the waiters in the curry house. We even stold some sweets for Andy.

Then it was time for the film. We saw Stranger than Fiction, and bloody good it was too. Excellent script. Well acted with a star studded cast. Really really nice and interesting. Go see!

Some of the theatre nurses at work thought I’d left cos they’d not seen me for ages. And I’m hardly there for the next two weeks either. It’ll be a shock to the system when I have to actually go and give anaesthetic every day for a week.

Working nights this weekend. And revising a bit I hope and probably playing with my shiny new toy.
